The HSE West (Donegal) Healthy Gardening programme started back in April this year in eight locations around Donegal.
Healthy Gardening is a programme designed by the HSE Health Promotion Department and run in partnership with community development projects and other state agencies.
This year’s gardens are in Cloghan, Letterkenny, Castlefinn, Glencolmcille, Falcarragh, Dunfanaghy, Dore and Blissberry Social Farm in Mountcharles.
Healthy Gardening takes place during the growing season (from April to October), once a week delivered by a gardener and every second week for four hours delivered by experts in gardening, health and environmental fields.
The Garden at Blissberry Social Farm is supported by Donegal Family Resource Centre and Donegal VEC to local communities create a healthier environment and work towards self – sufficiency in their local area.
The course focuses on enjoying and respecting our natural surroundings, saving money by growing your own, and the health benefits of gardening and eating locally produced food. Lots of topics are covered including gardening through the growing season, green health, cooking demonstrations, food budgeting, composting and waste management, bee keeping, hen keeping and setting up sustainable enterprises.
The Healthy Gardening programme is open to people of all ages and from all walks of life.
