First Course at Blissberry Apiary completed by Sourh Donegal Beekeepers Association members Derek Byrne and Peter O’Connor

We have just completed our first successful beekeeping course at our new Apiary at Blissberry Social Farm Mountcharles. The course was delivered by Derek Byrne and Peter O’Connor for local community members who wished to start keeping bees and for those local beekeepers who wished to improve their beekeeping skills.

Workshops over the last four weeks gave participants an overview of the craft of beekeeping, starting with a presentation about honeybees, followed by a guided tour with practical demonstrations at our new Apiary – which allowed all the opportunity to get up close to our bees!Separate practical sessions took place down at the apiary during the active hands on sessions which focused on bee handling and management skills. Class size for these practical sessions was kept small (maximum of 4 X3 groups) as to ensure everyone had ample opportunity to gain hands on experience. Bee suits JUST REQUIRED through support from Donegal Family Resource Centre, Donegal ETB and Donegal Bees were provided for use during these sessions.

Advanced courses coming soon – further information from Derek, Peter or Larry
